Things to do at Charters Towers

There is a lot of things that you can do while you are enjoying your stay at Leahton Park.  Most people just like to relax while they are here but because we are so close to Charters Towers this is a great place from which to explore the town. From the historic Venus Battery & Miners Cottage to the iconic Tors Drive In there is plenty to keep you occupied while you are enjoying our hospitality. Charters Towers Visitor Information Centre –   The centre holds a wealth of knowledge on Charters Towers and the regional and surrounding outback towns.  Also available are public internet facilities and a booking service for local tours and attraction. Miners Cottage & Museum – The old Miner's Cottage building in Charters Towers, is a typical example of a late 1800's workers cottage. These timber framed "inside/outside" homes were  a common sight in the early days of this historic gold "boom town" Zara Clark Museum - The Charters Towers Museum (c.1883) is housed in a late nineteenth century commercial building. Gold was discovered in 1871 and production peaked in 1889 to make Charters Towers home to one of Australia's richest goldfields. The museum contains items pertaining to the history of Charters Towers. The large collection includes transport vehicles, documents and domestic items. Venus Battery – The battery is of national cultural significance as the largest surviving battery relic in Australia and oldest surviving battery in Queensland. Constructed in 1872, it was a public or custom mill in its heyday and became a State battery in 1919 to provide ore crushing facilities for small miners long after other mills had closed. It ceased commercial operations in the early 70s, after a century of service.  New interpretive displays present the process of extracting gold from quartz with interactive characters telling the stories of not only how the battery worked, but also of their working lives and times and events of Charters Towers. Ghosts of Gold Heritage Trail - If it's quirky tales about ghostly characters you are after, then the Charters Towers ghosts of gold Heritage Trail is for you.  Our ghosts from our gold rush and their stories are told at four venues throughout the city. Tors Drive In - one of the oldest drive-in theatres in Queensland, and has been open continuously since 1966! Come along to see the latest movies and recapture some of the nostalgia of the drive-in era. You'll always get double features at the Tors for less than the price of a single movie at other cinemas and  have the best hot food and candy bar in town at the lowest prices.
